Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a historical novel, in which many characters and events are fictional and very different from historical facts. However, this novel had a profound impact on the study and spread of ancient Chinese history and culture. Many characters and events were also studied by historians. For example, many of the characters mentioned in the novel during the Three Kingdoms period, such as Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan, did exist in history. Some of the events in the novel, such as the Battle of Red Cliff and the Empty Fortress Strategy, were also recorded in history.
