Zhang Jie is a famous woman in contemporary China. Her novels have an important development and change in the expression of female consciousness. In Zhang Jie's early novels, the female consciousness was often presented as the background and theme of male stories. For example, in her masterpiece Gone with the Wind, the female protagonist Scarlet's female consciousness was described as very limited. Her main purpose was to get rid of the control of men and pursue her own happiness. However, with the development of Zhang Jie's novels, she began to pay more attention to the expression and exploration of female self-consciousness. In " Golden Age," the female consciousness became the protagonist. The female characters in the novel began to have the ability to think independently and make decisions. They no longer passively accepted the setting and fate of men. Later, in Zhang Jie's novels, the expression of female consciousness was more diverse and rich, including feminism, female gender roles, female emotions and so on. For example, the female consciousness of Mei Ting, the heroine in her novel Heart, was deeply explored. She began to realize the constraints and limitations of her traditional gender roles and tried to get rid of them. The development and change of Zhang Jie's novels in expressing female consciousness reflected the gradual understanding and reflection of female characters and gender consciousness in contemporary Chinese society.
