The description of the environment was one of the most commonly used techniques in novel writing. By describing the environment, one could create an atmosphere, portray characters, and promote the plot. The functions of environmental descriptions included, but were not limited to: 1. Description of the background: The description of the environment can explain the time, place, climate, social environment and other background information of the story so that the reader can better understand the background and plot of the story. 2. Enrichment of the atmosphere: The description of the environment can be used to describe the natural environment and social environment to exaggerate the atmosphere. For example, the description of the weather, scenery, sound, smell and other sensory elements can make the reader feel the atmosphere and emotions of the environment. 3. Prominent characters: Description of the environment can also be used to highlight characters. For example, by describing the environment in which the character is located, it can portray the character's personality, identity, state of mind, and so on. 4. Driving the plot: The description of the environment can provide background information and situations for the development of the plot. Through the changes in the environment, it can drive the ups and downs of the plot. The sky was overcast and gray clouds covered the city as if the city had been shrouded in darkness.
