The green crystal shooting into his eye was a naturally occuring event. He grew hella powerful but obviously had his ups and downs, and eventually at the end of the road he didn't quite achieve all that he wanted, so he tried to go to the past and redo it better. He failed and only managed to pass on the knowledge he refined in life to hasten his past self's growth so maybe he can do it better.

One of the many benefits was that people found him more approachable, this allowed him to learn how to interact with others.
