Chapter 2: Chapter 2: The Village of Flames

How could this be possible? Undead can't produce body heat! We are mere imitations of our human forms, we're just illusions!

If I was producing heat all over my body, it could only mean that I've somehow returned to my human form.

My hand rubbed the surface of the darksign for confirmation. Its tiny bumps on my shoulder blade were still present, but so was the damp sensation of sweat. I assumed I was also experiencing fatigue as well as all the other inconveniences of mortality, like thirst and hunger.

I really am a human.

I didn't know whether to feel elated at the fact that I was finally free from the curse or annoyed since I didn't know how to live as a human. My mind could only remember my life as an undead. Everything before that is blank.

"If things keep going like this, I'll die, right?"

Humans needed food and other types of necessities to survive, according to Siglinde, anyway. I, of course, did not know how to get these items and she didn't really elaborate on what they were. But a gut feeling tells me I need to find something to drink, or I wouldn't last much longer.

My gaze swept the surroundings in search of a water source and landed on a river near a clearing of trees. Upon closer inspection, I noticed its crystal clear qualities inviting me to take a sip.

I obliged its offer.

A cool sensation entered my mouth and flowed down my throat. Some tasteless, yet also something I could taste it would, and be a way to describe the liquid invigorating my body. It leads me to wonder what sort of sensation Estus would produce on my revived tastebuds.

After drinking to my heart's content, the irritating headache finally subsided. Energy returned to my legs, and I was ready to move again.

The next step was to get the hell out of this forest and hopefully find somewhere to stay.

I walked for another hour or so before chancing upon a path. My stomach rumbled along the way. Was this hunger?

While walking down the path, a carriage passed by me.

I caught up to them and jogged next to the side of the driver's seat.

"Could you give me a ride?" I asked.

The bald man looked down at me, and his neutral expression switched to one of disgust.

"No."

Before I could say anything else, he whipped the horses towing the carriage and abandoned me in a cloud of dust. I had a powerful urge to strangle his fat neck, but I controlled myself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hours passed with no town in sight. I wonder where that creature of the abyss was heading to. The uncomfortable sensation in my stomach grew stronger with each passing minute and the sun was barely over the horizon.

My situation only seemed to get worse. If I didn't find a town soon, I'd have to brave the night in a forest that could be home to dozens of hostile creatures.

"Great, just great," I mumbled to myself.

Speaking to myself was an unpleasant habit I picked up in Lordran. I could go for months without contact with another person. Some say it's the first stage of losing your mind and hollowing, but I beg to differ.

Then, before I could take another step, a loud kaboom ruptured through the forest.

The ground rumbled from the sudden explosion off in the distance that bathed the forest in bright light. My legs shook, nearly tumbling to the ground.

"This could be interesting,"

After getting regain balance, I made a beeline towards the source of the explosion, stopping only when a flaming village came into view.

"Help!"

"Run!"

The voices of people in distress echoed throughout the area. I narrowed my eyes and saw villagers running from small, green humanoid creatures wielding rusty daggers. Their faces were full of terror, some even had tears flowing out like waterfalls while the things had sinister smiles.

Two options crossed my mind as I observed the carnage. Option one; help these people and gain their favour, thus putting myself at risk or option two; running away and hoping I wouldn't have to deal with the creatures later."

Option two seemed the most appetising. I didn't know my abilities. The creatures could very well be stronger than me at this current point time.

However, my consideration for option two was destroyed when my eyes caught the sight of a certain destroyed cart with a fat man's dismembered corpse, withering away inside a sea of flames. He was, without a doubt, responsible for this mess in some way or another.

"Thirty or so creatures," I counted, "and one of me, not to mention there could be a lot more. Why do I always do this?"

Option one it is.

I exited the bush with my blade in hand and slid down the hill. Using the shadows as cover, I slipped into the village via a space between two houses and entered the streets.

Inside was much worse than I imagined.

The entire area was on fire. The fat man must have been transporting a sizeable amount of gunpowder for it to be like this. Villagers running for their lives littered the streets. It was total pandemonium.

"Better now than never."

I approached a distracted creature from behind. The Blighttown dweller was hacking away at an unidentifiable corpse and made noises of enjoyment. A pool of blood had formed around its feet and expanded with each slice of its dagger. The person had perished in pure, unfiltered, agony.

My blade came down upon its neck and sliced through it like butter before I allowed it to notice my shadow in front of it.

Plop!

Its head landed on the ground and rolled away while streams of blood spurted from the base of its neck. The rest of the creature's body hit the ground with a thump and dissolved, leaving only a tiny crystal in its wake.

I absorbed a pathetic number of souls from it, less than what a hollow from the asylum would give me. They were weaker than I thought, pitifully so.

I moved onto another creature, decapitating it once more. Then I killed another. It wasn't long before they realised their numbers were dwindling, but so were the villagers. If I took too long, everyone would be dead and the reason I came here would be lost.

It seemed like I needed to use more drastic measures.
