Say something like I improved my sleight if hand skills to where I was able to steal daggers from waist belts and rings from fingers. Maybe add a story of how he did it instead of just saying he did. something like I was panhandling when a wealthy man slapped my hands away and as he did so I lifted the ring from his finger.
