The horses were either skinned and dismembered or roasted whole over fires. Even while hundreds died each day, their screams ringing through the air, the living still had to fill their stomachs when the time came.

She sometimes read to him. Unable to refuse his pleas, she would sit on the bed and haltingly read epic sagas of ancient heroes or romantic poems of the bards. Riftan would lie with his head in her lap, his eyes closed as though he were listening to a sweet melody. No matter how much she stammered, he never looked at her with exasperation or treated her like a fool.

Losing her balance, Maxi flailed her arms. The wild horse had latched onto the edge of her cloak and was dragging her into the water. She struggled against it, but it was too strong, and she soon plunged into the water.

After flicking baffled glances at his commander, Ulyseon raised his hand and walked his horse forward. Much to Maxi's relief, Hebaron grabbed the young knight by the nape and clapped a hand over his mouth. Pretending not to notice their small scuffle, Maxi continued to look at Riftan imploringly.

Gripping Rem's reins, Maxi mounted the agitated horse once more. She clenched her thighs around the mare so she could not throw her off again and yanked the reins with all her strength. As she had been trained to do, the mare shot forward like an arrow.

There was no one else who had quite the same shade of red. Her luscious auburn curls, almost amethyst in the dark, turned into flames streaked with gold under the sun. His heart began pounding against his ribs. This was their first encounter since his arrival at Croyso Castle, and he was torn between wanting to talk to her and wanting to avoid her.

Riftan flinched ever so slightly. Ruth leaned forward to inspect an elaborate crown studded with emeralds, rubies, diamonds, and topaz. Next to it was a pile of bracelets, diamond necklaces, rings, silver hair ornaments, and a gilded jewelry chest. As the mage said, they were all items meant for a woman.

A laugh wheezed out of him. As if she would ever come here. The best course of action would be to banish her from his thoughts as soon as possible. Yet, how could he fend off the fantasies that came to him every night? It seemed impossible to stop acting like a pubescent youth absorbed in daydreams.
